Kinja'd!!!

SOMEONE WANTS TO BUY THE 911, MY CHILDHOOD, AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! ;_;

Context: Last summer, a guy saw me working on the car in the garage and asked me if I wanted to sell it. I said I’m not sure and he’d have to ask my dad; I gave him his number and he left. I then went to work and told my dad not to sell my childhood.

Well, that guy surprisingly came back today while I was finishing up the valve covers and asked again if it was for sale and had $16,000 cash in hand if I wanted to sell it while I was working on it, looking around the car as I worked on it. And this guy knew his Porsche stuff to, damn near scared me with his knowledge. He knew more than enough to know what it was and what it had.

Again, he called my dad and then told me this: “He said it’s YOUR car, so you have the final say.”

So first off, my dad said the car belongs to ME now. HOLY SHIT. I’ve reached the point in our relationship where I now have actually acquired full inheritance of the 911, save for insurance. Holy wow Batman, I actually froze and was speechless when he said this. One thought that went through my head was “Dad, why the hell would you put this on me now?”, but I knew this would happen eventually. This is the third time it’s happened with me in the car, but this guy is persistent.

I offered the 944 instead, trying to save the 911, he didn’t want it, but would ask around (so technically it is for sale for the right price if anyone wants it). So I now have until Friday to give him a yes or no for $16k. I don’t want to sell my childhood away, I think I’d die, have a heart attack or something. And I’ve never been on the selling end of a car before, not one like this. What the hell do I do?? Kinda panicking! The right thing to do is say no. I need to tell myself this and repeat it as many times as my brain will allow.

So...some guy called your dad about your dad’s car and then the same guy that wants your dad’s car said “oh BTW ur dad said it’s your car so totes sell it to me for the cash I have in my hand.” Did you talk to your dad about this? Did you do any research on what a 911 Classic is going for ? $16k would be about right for an almost-basket case. There’s a 911 in CA for $16k and it’s half burnt to a crisp.

I think you need to tell this guy to get real with his offer or piss up a rope. He probably thinks you’re a dumb kid and will sell it to him for cheap. Don’t let him take advantage of you.

This. $16k is so low. That is why he said “Cash in hand, 16k. CASH” I’m not too privy to 911 values but my guess is that it would be worth north of $25-30k for the right buyer and at LEAST $23.5 if you needed moniez.

If, and thats a big if, you were going to sell it I would not take the 16k. An original 911 would garner a lot more on the open market.

If you want to put it up for sale for a ridiculous number right at the beginning of spring, think something like 40k. Best case scenario you made a ton more money that you should have, worst case you get to keep it.

Nah, don’t sell it.

1. It’s worth more than that anyway.

2. This is just based on the other posts of yours I’ve read about this car, and your history with it, so hey, I could be wrong: you’ll never, ever, ever, ever, ever be able to buy anything with a tenth of the value to you, personally, with any amount of money. You will regret selling - sometimes only at the back of your mind, and other times with a painful keenness - for the rest of your life.

No way man are you kidding? 911's are going through the roof. There are guys shipping hundreds back to Europe every couple months. In 5 years you will not be able to find an older 911 unless you are flat out loaded.

You can keep this car and use it every goddamn day, it will be worth just as much as if you kept in the garage. Driving a car is good for it, sitting is not.

If you are trying to make this a financial thing, you’d be stupid to sell it now instead of in 7 years. You could enjoy the car a bunch and still gain incredible value.

If you aren’t only concerned with money why the heck wouldn’t you keep this, and enjoy it. It may sound materialistic but if i was a big part of your dads life it could easy be very important to you later in life. That being what the hell is the rush?

Tell him no.

in response to the other guy I agree, I don’t think you mr op have any idea how much this car is actually worth or more importantly the rate it’s been climbing over the last 5 years.

No, my dad has said I actually have the final say in the matter. I went to work a while ago and he confirmed what he said. I this is forcing me to do things I never thought I’d have to do, I’m not an assertive or direct person when it comes to this and I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m extremely passive, but this is going past a line. I know the right thing to do is not sell it for such a price or at all, but I don’t know what to do for his response if I say no. I just don’t know.

Ya...considering targas (barf) get mid-20s plus and can go into the 40s, 16 is a low ball. Find it’s real value (this is a G-series, not sure?), then start there with pricing if you’re willing to sell. If you sell, take 90% of that, open a brokerage account (if you don’t have one) and invest it wisely.

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > K-Roll-PorscheTamer

Selling it would be one of those decisions you regret for the rest of your life, especially for such a lowball offer. If you do sell it you will try to buy another when you get into your forties. Then you will REALLY kick yourself since the value will have shot through the roof.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
03/09/2016 at 15:56

You’re not telling him “no”, you’re telling him that his offer was too low and you would be open to a better offer. Leave the ball in his court. Chances are (if he isn’t serious) he won’t contact you again. If he is serious then he’ll know you’re not an idiot and might offer you something reasonable.

Or just tell him it’s not for sale and let him make you a crazy offer, something like $30,000, but considering the 911 bubble hasn’t broken yet I’d hang on to it.

Kinja'd!!! Shane MacGowan's Teeth > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
03/09/2016 at 15:56

Kinja'd!!!1

Ok, to expand on the responses you’ve gotten below, you have a few options here (this assumes your dad is really cool with your decision either way).

1. Sell him the car for 16k cash.

2. Figure out the actual value of the car (I’m 110% sure it’s over 16k if he brought that in hand and started with that number), and then haggle to a deal.

3. Don’t sell the car.

Now, to me it sounds like you don’t want to sell the car at any price. That’s cool, I have stuff I’m the same way with. Even if you don’t like confrontation, you’ll hate getting rid of it more, and knowing that you screwed up every time you go in the garage. So just say, “I’m sorry, the car isn’t for sale.”

The bubble will burst at some point, just like any other bubble. So it comes down to on what’s currently more valuable to K-Roll, sentiment or money. Money, sell soon. Sentiment, sell...some other time?

As an older guy, if I was young again, I’d probably take the right amount of money and then make more money. Wait a awhile and then I can buy whatever the hell. However, I’ve never had much sentiment for a specific/my old man’s car - he sold his musclecar before I was born, so I don’t have a similar reference at all. That car is long gone. Now, I would like one or two of mine back, but I don’t mind getting something similar as it doesn’t need to be that EXACT car. In other words, I’d take the actual value, invest, and then buy a similar 911 in the future. But odds are against ever buying his dad’s car again...

Meh, I’d probably keep it. I dunno...haha

$16K for a 911? You probably can tell him that he must think you fell off the turnip truck yesterday.

You need to decide what would make you get out from under it. If he offered you $30K. $40K. $50K?

Which is what I did with my F-150. I said that if I could get $4K for that 20 year old truck, I’d take it. I had a guy offer me $2750. Told him to come back when he actually had more money.

Next guy who looked at it offered $4K. No need to haggle, since I wanted out at this point. I took it and left.
